On June 27th, the Village Square was filled with laughter, warm embraces, heartfelt memories and a few tears as staff, friends, and family gathered to honour Sara John Fowler’s retirement after 17 years at Mount St. Mary Hospital.
The afternoon was guided by Alistair, who MC’d the event through stories and humour (especially a tale about “parking in the Village Square”) that captured Sara’s impact. As well-wishers took turns sharing their own stories, it became clear just how deeply Sara had touched the lives of everyone around her. The nurses appreciated her guidance, the Sisters of St Anne remembered her compassion, our Board Chair spoke of the calm, steady leadership she provided day in and day out, and Dr. Vaughan shared how through Sara’s leadership Mount St Mary Hospital is the best run long-term care home that he works with.
It was evident to all that Sara had not only served the hospital, but had helped shape its heart and soul.
As the event drew to a close, Sara was honoured with a special gift. With a gentle reveal, a painting by renowned local artist Robert Amos was unveiled: a serene depiction of the Blondin Garden, the view from her office window; one of Sara’s favorite places on the grounds.
Moved to tears, Sara smiled. “This garden always reminded me why we do what we do,” she said. “It’s a place of peace, just like this hospital has been for me.” She then jokingly told her husband Roger that they would have to make room for it on their living room wall.
It was a farewell filled with gratitude—and deep admiration. Sara you will be missed.
